CHAPTER 69

Kincaide was on the bridge, smelling Reyhan’s funk and cologne with equal parts derision and humor.

Kali? Really, you old, racist, specist goat?

But he didn’t say anything. If Reyhan Herath could get over himself and consider an amazing woman like Kali to be beautiful and sexy, Kincaide wasn’t about to derail that one bit.

He was looking at the future right there. Not in the sense of children.

Reyhan was probably too old and Kincaide knew that the Monster Wives designs were incapable of breeding and bearing children. Heaven forbid that idiot Goaulda accidentally create some of the species from ancient fantasy stories.

As interesting as that might have been.

Hopefully, nobody decided to do it later. Kincaide doubted that Humans would ever grow up enough to be able to handle folks like Lilith running around with kids.

As interesting as that might have been.

The Monster Probe was a projection in the middle of the hollow square, with Computer Hasan off to one side as himself. Bald, beard, and beret.

Opera cape today. Ugly tunic.

It was like that stupid git was back with them.

This one had to listen to orders to shut up, though.

Kincaide smiled.

“Kincaide,” the Jhalyue asked in a voice already nearly indistinguishable from Human. “Are you ready?”

“We are,” he replied, stopping himself from saying something salty or sarcastic that might not translate well idiomatically.

If you had to explain the joke, it stopped being funny.

“Maneuver to the coordinates this unit is transmitting,” the Jhalyue continued.

Kincaide nodded to Dinushan and Tharushi. Hanishka was face-down over her sensors, learning whatever she might from the Probe. Reyhan was as well.

Odtsetseg would normally be present, possibly standing next to Zhubin and Kali directly across from Kincaide, but he’d asked her to remain aft. Inside the warp-shield. She was following along on a comm circuit instead.

That way, Altantsetseg would hopefully never figure out how Kincaide pulled off his next magic trick.

If it worked, it would be a doozy.

The image of the Jhalyue grew huge as Dashavatara moved in. Each of the four side facings of the cube had a hollow spot in it, like a bowl. Tiny, against the overall size of the vessel itself.

Utterly freaking huge on Human or even Alvar scales.

They weren’t docking. Dashavatara didn’t have the right external layout for that sort of thing without moving around some airlocks and bulkheads.

Instead, a field suddenly engulfed them, holding them in place.

“Tractor beam established,” Dinushan announced, shutting down his engines and nodding to Tharushi.

Like he understood such a device. The Jhalyue had called it a tractor beam. A giant hand like Odtsetseg might do with her telekinesis, holding Dashavatara in place within the bowl of the cube.

Where a whole bunch more Warp Voyagers could have joined them.

“Kincaide, this unit is about to activate the Warp Cavitation Bubble,” the Probe said. “There may be some disorientation for organics in the field, but my records state that it is a so-called visual distortion effect that can be defeated by not relying on optics and instead using electronic senses.”

“Understood,” Kincaide replied gruffly.

Dashavatara had been built with the bridge as a dome atop the goose neck forward.
